Somewhere else - LouisVuitton.com

On a spring day, a handful of children from SOS Village d'Enfants were invited to Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris for a guided tour and art workshop. The exhibition on display, <i>Ailleurs</i> (translation: <i>Elsewhere</i>) addresses themes of traveling, observing, and creating. The head of youth programming at the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, led a spirited visit that adapted to the children's sensibilities. She prompted the children with questions about expectations of “elsewhere” and encouraged their comments and participation. Pastels and markers in hand, the children were given blank postcards on which to draw their conception of “somewhere else” and the white rectangles were soon coated with trees, houses and flags in washes of colour. Creating a kind of “elsewhere round robin”, the children shuffled their postcards over to their neighbours, who in turn used the visual cues to describe the scenes in writing. Though the space is usually dedicated to contemporary art, the visit began with an analysis of Paul Gaugin’s gouache and watercolor La Fuite, which dates from the turn of the 20th century. Using this image as a springboard, the children discussed where they had been outside of Paris (“…my sister is going to Australia!” one girl announced proudly) and mused about what people elsewhere might be like (“they might not speak French”). The children's slapdash imagination brought in new vitality, and the elusive elsewhere was a keen presence. As of 2010, Louis Vuitton has been working with the charity SOS Children’s Villages, an international NGO that secures the education of abandoned or orphaned children. Louis Vuitton has participated in this organisation nationally as well as internationally, in places as far as Chengdu, China and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
