The Trunk of Memories

This animation was commissioned for the exhibition “Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs” in Paris.

In 1854 Louis Vuitton opened his first store in Paris on the 4 rue Neuve-des-Capucines and founded the company that bears his name. From the outset, his business was characterized by innovation. In 1858, Louis Vuitton displayed a series of flat trunks which were not only more solid than the current domed model but also more suited to the new modes of transportation. The 1870s were marked by the introduction of luxury luggage and in the face of imitation, Louis Vuitton changed from the gray Trianon canvas to a striped canvas. In 1889 a new Damier canvas was presented at the Paris Exposition Universelle in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. It was the first time the words ‘L. Vuitton registered trademark’ appeared on the canvas. The exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris opened on March the 7th 2012. The exhibition covers two floors of the museum, paralleling the innovations and creativity of Louis Vuitton with that of Marc Jacobs. In particular, the exhibition communicates what it was like to travel almost 150 years ago and Louis Vuitton’s contribution to the evolution of luxury luggage. This short animation by artist Christian Borstlap was commissioned by NOWNESS.com for the exhibition and is projected on the first floor of the space on a large screen.
